Ingredients

  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 1 cup celery, finely chopped
  • 1 cup onion, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried sage
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon poultry seasoning
  • 12 cups dry bread cubes
  • 2 cups low-sodium chicken broth
  • 2 large eggs, lightly beaten
  • Optional: 1/2 cup chopped pecans
  • Optional: 1/2 cup dried cranberries

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, melt the butter.
  3. Add chopped celery and onion, sauté for 5–7 minutes until softened.
  4. Stir in salt, pepper, sage, thyme, and poultry seasoning. Cook for 1 more minute.
  5. In a large mixing bowl, combine dry bread cubes with the sautéed vegetable mixture.
  6. Add chicken broth and lightly beaten eggs to the bowl.
  7. Gently fold until the mixture is evenly coated but not mashed.
  8. Fold in optional chopped pecans or dried cranberries if using.
  9. Transfer mixture to a greased 9×13 inch baking dish.
  10. Bake uncovered for 40 minutes or until golden brown on top and heated through.

Notes

  • Use day-old or oven-toasted bread for best texture.
  • Adjust broth slightly depending on desired moisture level.
  • Cover with foil during baking if the top browns too quickly.
  • Add cooked sausage for extra savory flavor.
