Fresh Green Bean Casserole is a classic holiday side dish made with tender green beans, creamy mushroom soup, and crispy fried onions. It’s a comforting and nostalgic recipe perfect for family gatherings.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups fresh green beans, trimmed
  • 2 teaspoons kosher salt
  • 10.5 ounces cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • 1 1/3 cups French fried onions
  • Cooking spray (for greasing the dish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and coat a 9×9-inch casserole dish with cooking spray.
  2. Bring a large pot of water to a gentle boil. Add the kosher salt and green beans. Cook for 8 minutes until tender. Drain well.
  3. In a large bowl, mix the drained green beans with the cream of mushroom soup and lemon juice until evenly coated.
  4. Transfer the mixture to the prepared baking dish and spread evenly.
  5. Bake uncovered for 35 minutes or until the casserole is bubbly.
  6. Remove from the oven, top with the French fried onions, and return to the oven for 5 more minutes until crispy and golden.

Notes

  • Use canned or frozen green beans if fresh is unavailable (30 oz canned or 20 oz frozen).
  • Substitute lemon juice with white wine or omit entirely.
  • For a homemade touch, make your own mushroom sauce using cremini mushrooms.
  • Top with shredded cheddar for a cheesy version.
